TriMet to adjust service on four bus lines during lower ridership hours

Schedule adjustments will occur at times when fewer people are riding, to improve service efficiency

A TriMet bus on Line 8-Jackson Park/NE 15th serves the Downtown Portland Transit Mall.

TriMet riders, check your bus schedules — service changes are coming March 1.

Buses will arrive less often on four TriMet Frequent Service lines, as a cost-saving measure when fewer people are riding. We are also streamlining another bus route to speed up trips, and we’ll make schedule adjustments on several more lines to keep buses on time.

Visit trimet.org and check out our trip planner to see how your travel may change. Be sure to set your travel date on or after Sunday, March 1.

Reduced frequency

We’re reducing how often buses run on four lines, at times when fewer people are riding.

Morning and evening changes

  • Line 8-Jackson Park/NE 15th: Buses will arrive less often before 8 a.m. on weekdays, and before 10 a.m. on weekends. Buses will arrive less often after 7 p.m. on weekdays.
  • Line 48-Cornell: Buses will arrive less often before 7 a.m. on weekdays, and before 10 a.m. on weekends. Buses will arrive less often after 11 p.m. all days.
  • Line 75-Cesar Chavez/Lombard: Buses will arrive less often after 6 p.m. on weekdays.
  • Line 76-Hall/Greenburg: Buses will arrive less often before 6 a.m. all days. Service to Beaverton will end 30 minutes earlier on weekends, due to low ridership late at night.

New route

We’re making a minor change to the route of Line 24-Fremont/NW 18th, to speed up buses.

Line 24 will no longer serve two stops with low ridership along North Kerby Avenue, streamlining the route and saving riders time. The new route will also bypass two pairs of stops served by other bus lines. Line 4-Fessenden and Line 44-Capitol Hwy/Mocks Crest will continue to serve those stops along North Vancouver and Williams avenues. The Vancouver Avenue stop at the Red Cross will be served by eastbound Line 24 buses only.

Schedule adjustments

Bus arrival times may change by 4-5 minutes on the following lines:

Line 4, Line 54 and Line 87 are Frequent Service bus lines.

Other bus lines may see smaller schedule adjustments. Be sure to plan your trip at trimet.org, and set your travel date on or after March 1 to see updated schedules.

We adjust bus schedules on a quarterly basis to improve connections and keep buses on time.

Why we’re reducing service

Last July, TriMet announced plans to begin cost-cutting measures to close a $300 million annual budget gap. The primary factors for that gap are cost increases from inflation, combined with less fare revenue and insufficient funding to sustain service levels. Failure to take action would have put TriMet on track to hit a fiscal cliff in the coming years. The impact of a fiscal cliff would be devastating to our service, riders and the regional economy.

We are reducing our internal spending and staff to bring expenses in line with our revenue, but we also must reduce service levels by at least 10% to stabilize finances and make TriMet service more efficient.

The changes coming to some bus lines March 1 are the second round in a series of service reductions and adjustments that will continue into 2027. We made an initial round of reductions at the end of November, affecting five bus lines.

The first two rounds of service cuts were designed to be relatively small, affecting fewer riders by reducing trips at times when not as many people are riding. However, service changes in August 2026 will be significantly larger.

We will publish our finalized service proposals on March 11. The TriMet Board will vote on the service plan later this spring. We will share additional service proposals for 2027 at a later time.
