Our website, trimet.org, has been updated so that riders can plan trips to see how bus and MAX service is changing, starting Sunday, Aug. 23
TriMet is urging riders to plan ahead and prepare for big changes coming to our transit system beginning Sunday, Aug. 23. Our website – trimet.org – has been updated to include the adjustments we are making this year to help address our current $158 million long-term budget deficit. The adjustments affect 33 bus lines and the MAX Green Line. They bring changes for thousands of riders who depend on TriMet for safe, reliable transportation to work, school, medical appointments and much more, who may now have a longer walk; an added transfer; or an adjusted route, as part of their trip on TriMet.
The service adjustments coming in August are part of TriMet’s multi-year strategy to resolve our deficit by reducing expenses and increasing revenue. These changes streamline our service, focusing on areas where people are most likely to ride, while reducing duplication and eliminating service where ridership is very low.

What’s changing on August 23
We worked closely with riders and the community to shape these changes so they preserve as much service as possible while reducing overlap and discontinuing service in areas where it is not well used. Here’s what’s ahead, in just 40 days:
- The MAX Green Line will run a shorter route, operating only between Gateway and Clackamas Town Center transit centers. Riders will be able to connect with other MAX lines at Gateway, and for many, a bus line may provide a faster option to reach Downtown Portland.
- Dozens of bus lines will be combined or adjusted where routes overlap or run closer to one another. This makes the system more efficient while maximizing our service investments.
- Some routes will be adjusted to maintain service in higher-ridership areas.
- Some bus lines will run less often during hours and days when fewer people are riding.
- Two bus lines will be discontinued in areas with very low ridership and no other TriMet service nearby.
View detailed, line-by-line changes here.
In total, 34 of TriMet’s 79 bus lines and five MAX lines will be directly affected, with two of those lines being eliminated. As a result, riders across the system may feel the ripple effects. We encourage every rider to visit trimet.org, and plan a trip for Aug. 23, to know what to expect.
Later this summer, we will make another update to our Trip Planner to include information on buses serving Portland high schools. That service will continue, but some students may have to adjust their trips from previous years.

Understanding TriMet’s budget deficit
The August service changes are one part of a larger effort to bring spending in line with our resources and close TriMet’s significant long-term budget deficit. During this current fiscal year, which began on July 1, most of the reduction to our budget deficit comes from internal spending cuts, including a historic staffing reduction.
The TriMet Board of Directors adopted our agency’s fiscal year 2027 (FY 2027) budget on May 27, 2026. Most of the actions directed in the adopted budget streamlined our overall spending from the budget proposed in March by about $64.5 million.
The FY 2027 adopted budget reduces overall spending by $44.6 million compared to the FY 2026 adopted budget, and reduces the long-term budget deficit to $158 million. The FY 2027 budget totals $1.75 billion, with $1.14 billion available for service, operations, capital/maintenance projects and other requirements. The budget relies on $187.4 million in reserve funds to close the gap between expenses and revenues.
