The phones are part of comprehensive efforts to combine technology with security, giving riders more tools for safety

More blue-light security phones are coming to TriMet stations and transit centers, part of our ongoing investment in technology that helps our personnel respond faster and more efficiently across the system. Blue-light security phones mean that with a push of a button community members can connect with trained dispatchers 24 hours a day.
By the end of June, TriMet will have 92 of the blue-light-topped red towers or wall-mounted versions of the security phones installed across our system, an increase of 33 of the push-button devices. In total, they will be located at most of our MAX stations and all transit centers. Riders on the westside will want to keep a lookout as they start appearing at MAX stations and transit centers in Hillsboro and Beaverton. The highly visible phones provide a direct line of communication with TriMet’s Security Operations Center, where trained dispatchers are standing by.
Installation of the latest batch of phones began on Monday, May 11, 2026. They will be available for use within a day or two of being installed.

Blue-light security phones make it simple to report suspicious activity, vandalism, inappropriate behavior or someone in need of help: just press the red button, wait a few seconds for an answer, then speak. Each blue-light phone is also equipped with a live-view camera, monitored by our security dispatch team. In addition to incoming calls, dispatchers can use the phones to make outbound calls if they witness activity that needs to be addressed.
Added in late 2024, the Security Operations Center has led to 30% faster response times and a 40% improvement in de-escalating situations before they turn serious. The Security Operations Center not only gives us more eyes on the system and a centralized hub from which to deploy personnel when needed, it allows us to collect data that’s used to inform where and when we position our security teams throughout the day.
The expansion of blue-light security phones is part of an ongoing, systemwide effort to reinforce a visible security presence and heighten our security coordination. This has also included introducing other types of technology at more locations. In May 2026, for example, TriMet expanded our secured-elevators program to seven elevators to reduce the likelihood of misuse, and we continue adding to our network of 10,000 security cameras.
Keeping pace with technology for faster responses
TriMet has introduced multiple new safety and security initiatives across the system over the past several years:
- Since 2021, TriMet has improved the lighting at 90% of our stations, transit centers and Park & Rides.
- In 2023, TriMet launched a 24/7 security hotline — 503-238-7433 (RIDE) — that riders can text or call to report concerns.
- In 2024, TriMet opened our Security Operations Center, staffed 24/7 by dispatchers who coordinate responses and monitor the system in real time.
- In 2025, TriMet expanded a security effort to restrict two more system elevators to riders only using a valid form of fare payment after an initial pilot of a secure elevator at the Hollywood/NE 42nd Ave MAX Station. In May 2026, we secured elevators for rider-use ony at seven other locations.
By combining real-time communications tools, live monitoring and secured-access to elevators, we’re working to help our riders feel safe while also connected to the teams that are looking out for them.
If a blue-light phone isn’t available, we encourage riders to call or text our security hotline at 503-238-7433 (RIDE). While TriMet’s Security Operations Center dispatchers can contact 911, for faster police response in emergencies, call or text 911.
