Ride into 2026 on TriMet, as free rides return on New Year’s Eve

From 8 p.m. through the end of service – including extended MAX service – riders can hop on board without buying a Hop card or tapping

Whether “old acquaintance should be forgot” is a question as old as Auld Lang Syne, but not for TriMet this New Year’s Eve. Those riding to and from celebrations remain our top priority, with a return of our annual tradition of buses and MAX trains providing the most affordable and safest travel option this New Year’s Eve.

On Dec. 31, TriMet will once again offer free rides systemwide after 8 p.m. through the end of service. Buses will run on their regular schedules, while extended late-night service on the MAX Blue, Green, Orange and Yellow lines will keep riders moving past the stroke of midnight. Our LIFT paratransit service will also be free after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Heading out for a night on the town? Traveling to a gathering with friends and family? Whatever your plans, TriMet is committed to helping you welcome 2026 without the risks of impaired driving.

Offering free rides on New Year’s Eve has been a tradition for decades. It’s our way of encouraging people to make responsible choices. It reduces the number of cars on the road and supports safer streets for everyone.

This year, free rides on New Year’s Eve are made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Oregonians Credit Union. TriMet is proud to continue this effort, as are C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar, which will also provide free rides on New Year’s Eve
