MAX Red Line track improvements near PDX to increase reliability

Work underway June 22-July 7; one-day disruption from Gateway Transit Center to airport on Saturday, June 27

TriMet will make track improvements on the MAX Red Line near the Portland International Airport from Monday, June 22 through Tuesday, July 7, to increase service reliability. Most of the work will not affect service. However, it will require a one-day limited disruption of the Red Line on Saturday, June 27.

Alternate service during MAX Red Line disruption

To serve MAX Red Line riders on that day, TriMet will run shuttle buses between Gateway Transit Center and PDX. Some of the shuttles will go express between Gateway and the airport, while others will serve the four stations along that Red Line segment. TriMet staff will be on hand to direct and assist customers. Riders should plan an additional 15-30 minutes for their trips during the disruption. To lessen delays, riders heading to the airport need not wait for a Red Line train and take the first train, whether Blue, Green or Red, to Gateway Transit Center to connect with a shuttle bus. The MAX Red Line between Beaverton Transit Center and Gateway Transit Center will not be affected.

Improvements to increase MAX reliability

Crews will improve the trackway at NE 82nd Avenue next to Airport Way. Soil conditions have led us to slow trains down through the area for safety. Crews will upgrade materials under and alongside the rails that will allow trains to run at regular speeds, thus improving time and connections with other MAX and bus lines. Some of the work will be done during non-service hours, from about 12:15 a.m. through 4:15 a.m., and will create noise. TriMet staff is connecting with nearby hotels to inform their patrons of the work.

We thank our riders for their patience and understanding while crews make these improvements.

Vehicle turn-lane closures

Vehicular traffic on NE 82nd Avenue and on Airport Way will encounter some turn-lane closures.

  • 82nd Avenue northbound right-turn lane onto Airport Way
  • 82nd Avenue northbound outside left-turn lane onto Airport Way
  • Airport Way eastbound right-turn lane onto 82nd Avenue
  • Airport Way westbound inside left-turn lane onto 82nd Avenue

Drivers may want to use I-205 to avoid the closures.
