TriMet extends Line 8 to NE Dekum Ave and MLK Jr Blvd, adding three new stops

All bus layovers moving to NE Winchell

Beginning June 7, 2015, TriMet will extend the Line 8-Jackson Park/NE 15th west on NE Dekum to NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, adding three stops. Line 8 buses will then layover at NE Winchell and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, allowing operators to take a break before their next run.

Currently some buses layover at the NE Winchell site and others go to NE Ainsworth at Grand Avenue. Moving all of the layovers to NE Winchell will make operations consistent for bus operators and neighbors. The move also provides the opportunity to add three new stops to the route that will make transfers easier for Line 8 and Line 6-Martin Luther King Jr Blvd riders. The three added stops, currently only served by Line 75-Cesar Chavez/Lombard, include two pickup/drop-off stops, one westbound at NE Dekum & 6th(ID 1292) and one eastbound (ID 1293), and a drop-off only site westbound at NE Dekum & M L King (ID 1273).

New layover location comes after several years of community outreach

Changes to Line 8 made in September 2012 led to buses laying over at NE Dekum Avenue and Durham Street. After concerns were raised by the Woodlawn neighborhood, TriMet temporarily moved the layover location to other sites and investigated building a permanent off-street location. In September 2014, after months of outreach including community meetings and conversations with neighbors and riders, TriMet chose not to pursue any of the identified off-street location options. Based on further analysis and what we heard from the community, TriMet believes extending the line to NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and placing the layover at NE Winchell will help us make operations consistent while providing quality service in Northeast Portland.
