Take TriMet to take in the holiday festivities

Get in the holiday spirit and leave the driving to TriMet tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 29. The Macy’s Holiday Parade takes to the streets of northwest and downtown Portland in the morning and the holiday tree lights up at Pioneer Courthouse Square that night. Avoid the hassle of parking by hopping on the MAX or a bus to get to the festivities. All MAX lines run through downtown as well as more than 15 bus lines.

Macy’s Holiday Parade

Arrive early for the parade to get a spot along the route (details here). During the parade, which steps off at 9 a.m. and goes through about 10 a.m., 12 bus lines will be detoured. The lines affected are 4, 8, 9, 15, 16, 17, 20, 33, 35, 44, 51 and 77. For detour information go to trimet.org/alerts.

Expect minor delays to buses on some other lines as well as MAX trains as they hold from time to time to allow the parade to pass.

Portland Tree Lighting Ceremony

Portland’s holiday tree will be lit up during a ceremony that begins at 5:30 p.m. at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Due to the large crowd expected at the square, the following MAX platforms will be closed from 4 p.m. until about 7 p.m., or when the crowds disperse:

  • Pioneer Square North MAX Station
  • Pioneer Square South MAX Station
  • Pioneer Courthouse/SW 6th Ave Station

Riders should deboard a stop before or after to reach the square.

TriMet will have extra staff on hand in the downtown and Lloyd Center district throughout the day. In addition to the parade and tree lighting, Pearl Jam will be performing at the Moda Center at the Rose Quarter Friday night. The concert is expected to draw some 16,000 people. Remember, all MAX lines serve the Rose Quarter.
