Light rail construction means closing Powell at 17th Avenue for the weekend
Southeast Powell Boulevard will be closed to all traffic between 17th Avenue and 21st Avenue on the weekend of July 20 for construction of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project.
Lane closures on Powell Boulevard, U.S. 26, will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday July 20 with traffic in both directions narrowed to one lane. All lanes will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians at 11 p.m. with the road re-opened by 5 a.m. Monday July 23.
The closure is necessary to allow crews to demolish the Powell Boulevard overpass and prepare for construction of two new structures, one for the new MAX line and the other for motorists, bikes and pedestrians.
During the weekend closure, local motorists should use Southeast McLoughlin, Holgate and Cesar Chavez boulevards as a detour and should expect delays in the area. Others should use alternate routes.
Additional night work and lane closures will take place on Powell later this summer.
The 7.3-mile Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail will open in September 2015.
