New vandalism to TriMet bus shelters overnight

The vandalism of TriMet bus shelters continues with glass panels broken out on 12 more shelters overnight, bringing the number damaged this week to 21. Most of the shelters damaged overnight were on or near Southeast Division Street. Three of the shelters were among those targeted earlier in the week. All four shelters at 82nd and Division were vandalized. Crews will be out today repairing the glass panels.

This week’s damage comes after 41 shelters were vandalized in February. The cost of the February damage repairs was more than $26,000. The estimate for this week’s damage is between $10,000 to $20,000. It’s not just costly, but poses a safety hazard for riders.

The Transit Police Division is contacting nearby businesses to determine if any security cameras may have captured video of the vandals. TriMet is also appealing to the public to help catch those responsible. Be aware and if you hear or see shelters being damaged, call 9-1-1 immediately. TriMet is offering a reward of up to $1000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the vandalism. If you have information that can help, call 503-238-RIDE.
